*Turmeric is in the ginger family and has been used for centuries for therapeutic remedies. It is a primary ingredient in Indian curries and is what gives it the yellow color. The powerful component of turmeric is curcumin (Turmeric is made up of three curcuminoids: curcumin, desmethoxycurcumin and bis-desmethoxycurcumin).
Turmeric has many health benefits. The curcumin in turmeric has antioxidant properties as well as being anti-inflammatory; it neutralizes free radicals on its own, then stimulates the body’s own antioxidant enzymes.
It has been used in Chinese medicine to treat depression and it may prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain. It is interesting to note that curry-loving India is one of the countries that has the lowest incidences of Alzheimer’s, ranking 165 out of 172 countries (USA ranks second highest).
Turmeric has also been touted for it’s anti-microbial properties, cancer fighting abilities, weightloss help, as well as pain management and even protecting the liver by increasing bile release.
If you want to use fresh Turmeric root it is best to chop or grate it and let steep in hot water for at least 2-3 minutes and then stain and add it to your drink.
Turmeric has been used as a fabric dye for centuries and will stain your fingers, countertop and utensils yellow. It washes off; try baking soda, vinegar, or lemon juice for stubborn stains.
If you have any health issues, check with your health practitioner before trying this drink. Pregnant woman should not use without confirmation from their doctor.
